The 'Auto Post Thumbnail' plugin scans to see if a post thumbnail (featured image) has been set up for posts and if not will take the first image it finds embedded in the post and assign it as so.

If you want to skip certain posts from this action, just add the skip_post_thumb term to a custom field.

A PRO version for this plugin is also available.

It adds extra features to the free version, with support for extracting featured images from videos, custom post types, multi-lingual support and the option to delete generated thumbnails.

Installation:

Unpack and upload it to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory.
Activate the plugin through the 'Plugins' menu in WordPress.
